Learning Support Service

Learning SupportIron Mill College Learning Support Service

At Iron Mill, we offer a very special learning environment to our diverse and growing community of students.

Our vision is to offer the optimum in inclusive provision with particular focus on the needs of the adult learner and mature student:

“Every student will feel warmly welcomed, cared for, respected and supported, and the prior lived experience of each learner will be valued” - Iron Mill College.

Who can use our Learning Support Service?

We are here to support students who have an identified and diagnosed disability, medical or mental health condition, or Specific Learning Difficulty (SpLD), including dyslexia. If you are not sure if this service applies to you then please just check with us and if we can’t help, then we’re sure to know someone who can.

We also offer support and advice to our members of staff in how to ensure that the learning support requirements of our students are met.

If your course is full-time and validated by the University of Worcester, you will have access to the support offered to all university students by the University of Worcester Disability and Dyslexia Service.

What support can we offer?

We will provide the support that is available to us as a small, independent college and signpost students to other services that may be available to them.

Examples of support that we can offer:

  • Discussing the barriers facing students and their potential learning support needs.
  • Supporting disabled students throughout their studies, offering advice and support.
  • Liaising with college staff to put appropriate support in place.
  • Implementing special arrangements for lectures and course work. This might include notes in advance or special arrangements such as extra tutorials to support course work.
  • Ensure we invite external specialist scrutiny (e.g. Living Options) on the accessibility of our venues, facilities and support, taking advice where necessary and building any recommendations into our plans for college development.
  • Offer guidance and training to staff and students.

We encourage you to contact us as soon as you have decided to study at Iron Mill College so that we can discuss all aspects of your studies and any potential barriers you might face. We have Open Days and Open Evenings in Exeter and Poole, and online, throughout the year, open to all prospective students.

However, our role doesn't stop there and we can meet with you at any point throughout your studies to discuss any of your learning support needs in a confidential and supportive environment. Please contact us to discuss your support needs with us and we will do as much as we can to help.

How can I contact the Learning Support Officer?

Please contact our Student Education, and Learning Officer, by email at studentservices@ironmill.co.uk, or by telephone on 01392 219200, for further information or help.
