In this workshop David will present the key elements of the framework for Effective Reflective Practice he has devised with Christian van Nieuwerburgh for their recently published book (“Your Essential Guide to Effective Reflective Practice – Improving Practice through Self-reflection and Writing”, Sage, 2025). There will be opportunities for participants to begin to explore the relevance of the framework for their own reflective practice and personal and professional growth.

Any practitioners wishing to review how they reflect on their practice and its impact on others (e.g. clients, service users, colleagues). Students and practitioners required to provide evidence of reflective practice for assessment or credentialing purposes. This includes (but is by no means limited to): counsellors, coaches, mentors, teachers, health professionals, social workers, business managers, project managers, administrators
David is a leadership coach with over 20 years’ experience of working with senior and middle managers in public services (e.g. the NHS). He is also an experienced coach supervisor, mentor and educator. Reflective practice is at the heart of David’s approach to his work with clients and regular, planned reflective practice is a central feature of a commitment to his own lifelong learning. As an art-based practitioner he has established a habit of creative reflective practice to explore his work and relationships with clients. In addition, David encourages clients to create images or cartoons to enable them to explore the challenges and successes they experience in their work. David is an author and describes himself as a “management cartoonist”’, using humour to encourage reflection about the absurdities of organisational life. He is the resident cartoonist for the Association for Coaching’s “Coaching Perspectives” magazine.
