A Student's View - BA (Hons) in Integrative Counselling

Fiona, a student on our BA (Hons) in Integrative Counselling course shares her very personal experience with the course, her success and her journey.

Before I started my studying with Iron Mill, I was General Manager and ran a local newspaper with my husband in Cornwall. In 2011 I had an unexpected, life changing experience as my husband was killed in a road traffic accident. The newspaper became a place I was extremely unhappy in. I felt compelled to re-evaluate my career and follow the path I felt passionate about, helping people. I remained running the paper on my own for another 4 years, but was inspired by meeting someone who talked about a counselling diploma he was doing at Iron Mill College.

After attending an open day, and really connecting with what I had seen and learnt in one day, I applied to enrol on the Certificate course in September 2014, and immediately knew I had found my vocation. Thus, a new pathway was being forged for me and I haven’t looked back.

Since the certificate course, I have furthered my training at Iron Mill by completing the Advanced Diploma in Integrative Counselling, qualifying in July 2017, re-affirming how much I enjoy and have flourished in this line of work. My passion for learning didn’t stop there and Iron Mill provided for me once again by allowing me to join the BA (Hons) Top Up degree group, graduating in November 2019. Not only has this solidified my learning in Integrative Counselling, it has given me more confidence in my working practice and fulfilled a lifelong dream of possessing a degree.

Over these five years of study, I feel I have grown and learnt so much about myself, as well as counselling. With the help of the knowledgeable, supportive tutors and staff, my experiences at Iron Mill have been exciting, enjoyable and challenging both emotionally and academically. I had little knowledge of the counselling world at the beginning of this journey, and sometimes wondered if I would ever learn all the theories and skills. Now, I have my own way of working, encouraged by my tutors and feel confident and excited for the future.

The Iron Mill equipped me with the confidence to set up my own private practice and I am now thoroughly enjoying the autonomy and freedom private practice provides. I will most definitely return to the Iron Mill to attend their various and interesting looking CPD Workshops and further learning, confident in the knowledge that I will feel welcomed and at home there.
