As problems in our world become ever more complex, people are seeking out the rewarding career of counselling, as well as the services of counsellors in many different contexts, including online.

But what is that work really like? Who might counsellors help and how? How might counselling training help you cope with your own everyday problems?

So you want to be a counsellor? will offer participants an introduction to the field of counselling, from initial qualities the profession requires to training, costs and employment opportunities.

This online short talk followed by the opportunity for Q and A will be useful for anyone who ever wondered about becoming a counsellor. Pop into our free talk to find out more about this colourful, dynamic and sometimes controversial profession.

Meet the Lecturer, Dr Marilyn McGowan

Marilyn is a tutor and development worker for the Iron Mill College. She has specialised in counselling young people and supervising practitioners involved in the care of vulnerable young people and their families.

Her work is underpinned by over twenty-five years’ experience of counselling in schools and youth organisations as well as working as a development practitioner with national charities. Her professional doctorate considered the importance of ethos in organisations offering counselling and the contribution of counselling to pastoral care in education. She believes in the service of counselling not only to the contribution of well being in individuals but also to social justice.
