A Student's View - The Certificate in Counselling

Marie-Claire shares her experience as a student on our Certificate in Counselling course.

I had been interested in counselling and psychotherapy for a number of years, but had never had the confidence or circumstances to pursue this path until recently. Coming from a teaching background, it was important for me to find a course that combined inspiring teaching on the theory and history of psychotherapy with a positive, encouraging learning environment.

I found all this with the Certificate in Counselling at Iron Mill College. It appealed to me because it gave me a good foundational knowledge of different theoretical approaches, but also some valuable practice in some of the key skills in counselling. I found the tutor and the rest of the class very supportive, and the tutor cultivated an open, accepting space for us all to share experiences and personal development. We learnt and developed together throughout the course. The sessions involved fascinating discussions, as well as practical activities related to the counselling skills and theories we were exploring.

Although I took some time off my regular teaching job to do the course, the part time structure means that it can fit in well with work and busy lives.

The course has profoundly changed the way I see myself and the world around me, and has positively impacted the way I relate to and work with others. It has made me realise that this is the path I would like to follow, and I have recently signed up for the Advanced Diploma course to continue my studies. The course has been a wonderful experience, and I’m looking forward to the next step!

What our Students Say

I felt supported and challenged throughout my FdA at Iron Mill and this allowed me to become the therapist I aspired to be, as well as discover academic skills which are unique to this course.

What our Students Say

"Every weekend is full of practical skills to learn with the added theoretical background needed to understand it. The makeup of the group allows us to learn from each others experiences and from people with different therapeutic backgrounds. It's a great course with a supportive and excellent tutor."
