The Iron Mill Counselling Service (IMCS) officially started in March 2014 with the mission to enable more people to attend talking therapies with a professional counsellor or psychotherapist.
Our aim is to provide a safe and confidential space where people can begin to heal. We focus on the whole person, providing time for people to talk about feelings, thoughts and concerns. We strongly believe in the importance of a relationship which is non-judgemental, respectful, open and genuine.
People come to counselling for all sorts of reasons, including loss and bereavement, depression, anxiety, relationship issues, stress, anger management, workplace bullying, personal development, self-esteem, sexual / sexuality issues; and many more.
We always stress that as counsellors we don't have the answers; we are there to help people find their own answers, gain insights and new perspectives. We are all the masters of our own lives, whether we realise it or not! However, everyone needs a little extra support at various times in their lives, there is no shame in that. Even as qualified counsellors we recognise the benefits of continuing our own personal therapy, as we never stop growing and changing.
It's not always helpful to talk to a family member or friend about issues and concerns within our lives; talking to a counsellor who doesn't know us personally means that they are fully focused on understanding issues and concerns from our own perspective.
At IMCS we offer both Integrative Counsellors and TA Psychotherapists. In Integrative Counselling we believe everyone is different and therefore make use of a variety of methods drawn from a range of therapies. By utilising aspects of a variety of models, we can create a therapeutic environment focused on individual needs; no one theory holds the answer, all theories are valuable within our therapeutic work together.
We believe that the quality and depth of the therapeutic relationship is a central component in our work; it is a collaborative relationship with clients at its centre. We view individual clients in a holistic way - mental, physical and emotional health.
TA Psychotherapy honours the uniqueness of each individual and their autonomy to choose between old beliefs and patterns of behaviour and new expanded options of self-healing contact with self and others. The relational approach to TA involves an emphasis on the process of relating, with self and others. It aims to place relationships at the heart of psychotherapeutic work, and sees relational experiences as providing some of the most powerful reparative effects of this approach to psychotherapy.
If you would like to find out more about counselling and psychotherapy at IMCS please do give us a call or send an email. Jackie will be available to help with any questions you may have and to arrange a free assessment session. These sessions provide a great opportunity to meet a member of staff and get a feel for the service, our ethos and decide whether you would be comfortable to commit to regular sessions with us.
If you do decide to continue with the service, the assesor would match you up with a Counsellor or Psychotherapist who you would then work with on a regular basis. We want to offer you the best possible service and therefore will work with you to make sure you find the right counsellor or psychotherapist for you. If we feel that we are not the right service to meet your needs, we will support you to find an alternative service in the area.
The service is there to support you; we believe you have the right to be self-governing and therefore invite you to be a part of the decision-making process for your own journey with your Counsellor or Psychotherapist.
The service is staffed by mature adults who are currently undergoing professional training in counselling and/or psychotherapy with the Iron Mill College, and are supported in their work by experienced supervisors. The college is a long established educational and training organisation and a place of high professional standards. We are an organisational member of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP), adhering to its Ethical Framework.
As both a training college and counselling service specifically focused on mental health and wellbeing, we are excited to be able to provide this service to people in and around Exeter, and hope that you can find the right support for you; whether it be at IMCS or one of a number of other respected and valuable services in the area.
